It is always full on getting ready for new chicks! The ‘old chicks’ have to be moved into their ‘big girl’ houses, the rearing sheds cleaned, disinfected, moved, levelled, the verandas made secure and the brooder lamps serviced ready for the new arrivals.

The boxes are opened to a new life :-)

Chicks arrive 2 – 3 times a year and it is always an event in our calendar. We are trying a British breed this time from Lancashire. We have had them once before and they were a dream to rear – the current flock  of this breed (called the Sammies) are gentle, friendly and lay very well. It is always a challenge for us to find a breed that is hardy (we have challenging weather on Dartmoor), rear well and lay well.

It doesn't take them long to find their feet and start roaring around
